What is a Community Fundraiser?

Community Fundraisers are led by passionate individuals committed to making a difference for people living with brain cancer. Whether supporting a loved one, navigating their own journey, or honouring someone they’ve lost, these fundraisers turn personal experiences into purpose.

A community event can be hosted online or in person and is designed to bring people together. Anyone, of any age, anywhere in Canada can organize a fundraiser of any size. From neighbourhood walks and bake sales to golf tournaments and bike rides, these events are a powerful way to get involved, raise awareness, and support life-saving research.

By organizing events in their local communities, these fundraisers raise critical funds for brain cancer research. Many have lost loved ones to the disease, yet they continue to fundraise in their loved ones memory, ensuring that families don’t have to endure the same hardships.

How to Create Your Fundraiser

STEP 1

Pick a Date

Choose a day that works for you, birthday, anniversary, awareness month, or any special occasion. Have a backup plan just in case!

STEP 2

Find a Location

Host your event anywhere, home, park, workplace, golf course, or a local venue. Make sure it fits your guests and event style.

STEP 3

Spread the Word

The average survival for the most common and most aggressive adult malignant brain tumour, glioblastoma, is 15-18 months.2

Fundraise with Impact

Imagine the discoveries we could make if Brain Cancer Canada could fund every innovative research proposal we receive. Each year, 100% of net proceeds from fundraising are invested directly into research and neurosurgical technologies, but historical underfunding and the complexity of brain cancer mean there’s still much more to do.

Many promising projects face early-stage or late-stage funding gaps, slowing progress. By starting a fundraiser, you help support more research initiatives and accelerate life-saving discoveries.

Investing in research is the only way to change outcomes. Donations make it possible.

About Brain Cancer Canada

Brain Cancer Canada is a national, volunteer-driven charity dedicated to funding research for both adult and pediatric brain cancers.

Your support drives critical research to:

  • Discover more effective treatments

  • Accelerate the development of new therapies

  • Give brain cancer patients the same chance at survival as those facing better-funded cancers

Patients do not have the luxury of time. Research and innovation must move faster, because lives depend on it.

Brain Cancer Facts: Why We Fight

Every person diagnosed with brain cancer deserves access to research, treatment, and hope. Patients don’t have the luxury of time, research and innovation must move faster, because lives depend on it.

  • There are over 120 types of brain tumours, and roughly 38% are cancerous.

  • Every day, 9 Canadians are diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour.

  • Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children and young adults under 40.

  • Glioblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumour in adults, carries a poor prognosis, with an average survival of just 15–18 months. Standard treatment, (surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy), offers only a dismal median survival gain of 2.5 months.

  • Brain cancers are incurable, complex, unpredictable, and difficult to treat.

  • Despite its severity, brain cancer is severely underfunded, between 2005–2019, it received just 4% of total clinical trial investment.

Philanthropic support is critical. Donations fund breakthrough research, innovative neurosurgical technologies, and give patients and families hope for better outcomes.
